What testers say about the Roborock Q8 Max

The Roborock Q8 Max is a lidar robot on a charging dock: 5,500 Pa of suction with Carpet Boost, two rubber brushes that Roborock built to pick up more hair with fewer tangles, lidar navigation with 3D structured light at the front to spot obstacles, a 470-milliliter bin, a clip-on mop pad and a battery Roborock rates at up to 240 minutes. It climbs thresholds of up to 0.8 inches. The Q8 Max+ is the same robot with a dock that empties the bin into a 2.5-liter bag.

Vacuum Wars tested it as the Q8 Max+, against the Roborock S8+. It mapped the test home in about five minutes with better-than-average navigation efficiency, and its battery efficiency was well above what Vacuum Wars expected, which together with the long rated run time suits larger homes. It picked up fine to extra-large debris from hard floors and carpet, handled pet hair very well, and measured slightly more airflow and crevice pickup than the S8+. The Roborock app offers no-go and no-mop zones, room and zone cleaning, multi-floor maps and cleaning along the direction of the floorboards.

The drawbacks: in the carpet deep-clean test it scored slightly below average, long human hair gathered on the rollers, and its obstacle avoidance scored six, below average, against nine for the S8+. The mop is basic: the pad has to be clipped on for mopping and taken off for carpet, so a home with rugs needs two separate runs. Vacuum Wars prefers the S8+ if it can be found at a similar price. As a vacuum with plenty of stamina for a large home it holds its own, but anyone who mops often should look further.
