What testers say about the TP-Link Tapo RV30 Max Plus

The TP-Link Tapo RV30 Max Plus is an affordable vacuum-and-mop robot with lidar navigation, a simple drag mop fed by a 300 ml tank, and a self-emptying station with a three-liter bag that lasts about two months. Wirecutter names it the runner-up to the Roborock Q7 M5+, the pick for when the first choice is unavailable. The other test sources we follow have not rated it.

Wirecutter praises the suction for the money, the smooth navigation and the thorough job in open spaces, plus a self-emptying station that is rare at this price. The app is, in the testers' words, pretty good and works with most smart-home setups. At 3.9 inches the robot is fairly low, and the maker quotes 150 minutes of run time and 55 decibels of noise.

Wirecutter's reservations: less suction than the Q7 M5+, a less customizable program and less thoroughness in corners and nooks. The specifications add that the mop cannot lift on carpet and that there is no camera or 3D sensor to dodge cables and socks; the warranty is one year. For a home with mostly hard floors and little clutter it is one of the cheapest ways to get a self-emptying station.

What the tests like and dislike about the TP-Link Tapo RV30 Max Plus

Pros

  • Very good at cereal and litter, on carpet and hard floors alike Tom's Guide ↗
  • Maps the home quickly, and the app is easy to find your way around Tom's Guide ↗
  • Brings mopping and a self-emptying base for little money Tom's Guide ↗

Cons

  • Leaves a fair amount of pet hair behind on carpet Tom's Guide ↗
  • Mop handles only light grime and can leave sticky spills smeared Tom's Guide ↗
  • Cannot lift its mop or sense rugs, so carpet must be marked by hand Tom's Guide ↗

Each point sums up, in our words, the review of the test it names, and its link leads to that review. We do not summarize RTINGS or Wirecutter: their lists are linked above.

Dock, from the front 13 in high 6.5 in deep 13 in 9 in wide Robot, from the side 13 in across 3.9 in

From the published dimensions. The robot passes under furniture with 4 in of clearance or more. The dock needs a spot 9 in wide and 6.5 in deep.

Suction and brushes 6 facts
Suction power

Suction in pascal, as the maker measures it. More pascal helps on carpet, but it says little about how well the robot picks grit off a hard floor.

5,300 Pa
Anti-tangle brush

A brush that guides hair to the side instead of letting it wind around the shaft. It saves the cutting work in homes with long hair or pets.

no
Extending side brush

The side brush swings out in a corner or along a baseboard, so the dust there is swept in too. On this model: the maker names this feature nowhere on the product page, so we take it as no.

no
Carpet detection

The robot notices when it drives onto a carpet. Most then raise their suction, and a mopping robot lifts its mop or leaves it at the dock.

detects carpet and boosts suction
Suitable for pet hair

Whether the robot copes with pet hair: a brush that hair does not wind around and a dock that empties the bin for you. Where the maker does not say so itself, we read it from those two.

no
Filter type

The filter the exhaust air passes through. A HEPA filter holds back fine dust and pollen, which counts if someone at home has an allergy.

HEPA
Mopping 5 facts
Mop type

How the mop is built: flat pads, two spinning discs or a roller. Discs press harder on dried-on dirt, a roller rinses itself while it works.

flat or vibrating pad
Mop lift on carpet

How far the robot lifts the mop when it drives onto a carpet. From about 0.4 in (10 mm) a medium pile stays dry.

no
Mop extends to the edges

The pad slides out along a wall or a baseboard, so the last few inches are mopped as well.

no
Automatic mop detach

The robot leaves the mop at the dock before it vacuums a carpet, so the carpet never gets wet. On this model: the maker names this feature nowhere on the product page, so we take it as no.

no
Water tank in the robot

How much clean water the robot carries. It sets how long it mops before a refill, which a dock does by itself.

300 ml
Dock 10 facts
Empties the dust bin

The dock empties the robot’s dust bin, usually after every run. You only empty the dock’s bag or bin.

yes
Bagless

The dock collects dust in a bin instead of a disposable bag. No bags to buy, but you empty it yourself.

no
Dust bag capacity

How much the dust bag in the dock holds.

3 l
Dust bag lasts

How long the maker says a dust bag lasts with daily use. With pets or a lot of carpet it is shorter.

up to 60 days
Washes the mop

The dock washes the mop for you, so you do not rinse it by hand. On this model: derived from the station type.

no
Dries the mop

The dock dries the mop afterwards, so it does not sit there wet and start to smell. On this model: derived from the station type.

no
Hot-air drying

Drying is done with warm air instead of cold. It is faster and it helps against smell. On this model: derived from the station type.

no
Dispenses detergent

The dock mixes detergent into the water itself, from its own bottle. On this model: derived from the station type.

no
Plumbing hookup

The dock can be connected to the tap and the drain, so you never fill or empty a tank. It does need a connection nearby. On this model: derived from the station type.

no
Dock size (w × d × h)

The width, depth and height of the dock. Measure the spot you have in mind, and leave room for the lid and for the robot driving in.

9 × 6.5 × 13 in (22.8 × 16.4 × 33 cm)
Navigation and obstacles 7 facts
Navigation

How the robot maps your home and follows that map. Lidar measures with a laser and works in the dark, a camera looks along and recognizes more.

LiDAR turret
Obstacle avoidance

How the robot sees loose things on the floor, such as cables, socks or a pet accident. A camera with depth sensing sees more than a bumper that reacts on contact.

none
Climbs thresholds up to

The highest threshold the robot takes, as the maker states it. Measure your own: the step into a bathroom or onto a balcony is often higher. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

0.9 in (22 mm)
Climbing system for high thresholds

An extending leg or wheel that carries the robot over a high threshold. Without one it usually stops at about 0.8 in (2 cm). On this model: the maker names this feature nowhere on the product page, so we take it as no.

no
No-go zones

How you keep the robot out of a place: a zone you draw in the app, a virtual wall or a magnetic strip on the floor.

zones in the app, virtual walls
Recharge and resume

When the battery runs low in the middle of a run, the robot recharges and then carries on where it stopped.

yes
Stair-edge sensors

Sensors under the robot that see a drop, so it stops at the top of a staircase instead of falling down it.

yes
Robot 4 facts
Robot height

How tall the robot is. It decides whether it fits under your sofa, bed or cabinet.

3.9 in (10 cm)
Robot diameter

How wide the robot is. Narrower gets between chair legs more easily, wider usually means a bigger dust bin.

13 in (33 cm)
Dust bin in the robot

How much dust the robot holds before you empty it. It matters less with a self-emptying dock, which empties the bin after every run. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

300 ml
Noise

The noise in decibels, in the setting its source names: makers mostly give the standard setting, stores often the highest. 65 dB is like a vacuum at half power, 55 dB like a conversation.

55 dB
Battery 3 facts
Battery capacity

The capacity of the battery. It hints at the runtime, but how much the robot draws counts just as much. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

2,600 mAh
Runtime per charge

How long the robot cleans on one charge, at its quietest setting. After that it recharges and carries on where it stopped.

150 min
Charging time

How long an empty battery takes to charge fully in the dock.

4 h
Smart features and warranty 3 facts
Matter

Matter is the standard that lets devices from different makers work together. With it you can run the robot outside the maker’s own app. On this model: the maker names this feature nowhere on the product page, so we take it as no.

no
Voice assistants

Which voice assistants the robot works with, such as Google Assistant or Alexa. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

Alexa, Google Assistant
Scheduled runs

You set days and times, and the robot starts by itself, also when you are not at home.
