What testers say about the Dreame L40 Ultra

The Dreame L40 Ultra is an all-in-one robot with two spinning mop pads that extend and swing, an extending side brush and camera-based obstacle recognition. The station empties the bin into a 3.2-liter bag, washes the pads in 149 °F water, dries them with hot air, doses cleaning solution and can be plumbed in; the pads stay behind in the station when the robot only vacuums. TechRadar names it the best robot for pet hair; Vacuum Wars calls it better than the pricier X40.

TechRadar tested it in a home full of pets and saw it pull more hair out of carpet than any other robot the reviewer had tried, without clogging the emptying mechanism; it also did well on hard floors and mopping muddy paw prints. Vacuum Wars measured the highest battery efficiency it had seen, roughly double the average, with a quoted run time of 194 minutes, and a dried-stain mopping score above average and above the X40. On carpet it lifted embedded sand at an above-average rate.

Both testers' criticism concerns the station: it is big and the styling is not for everyone. Beyond that, the robot is on the tall side at just over 3.9 inches, thresholds stop at a little over 0.8 inches and the quoted 11,000 Pa of suction is modest next to newer models. Compare its price with the newer L50 Pro Ultra too.

What the tests like and dislike about the Dreame L40 Ultra

Pros

  • Handles pet and human hair very well, helped by its hair-cutting brush TechRadar ↗
  • Side brush and one mop swing outward to reach right into corners TechRadar ↗
  • Maps rooms quickly and accurately, and rides over loose rugs without snagging TechRadar ↗
  • Clears debris from hard floors and carpet and cleans deep into carpet Vacuum Wars ↗
  • Very frugal battery, among the best they have seen for runtime per charge Vacuum Wars ↗
  • Mops dried stains well and can leave its pads in the dock for carpet runs Vacuum Wars ↗

Cons

  • The dock is very large and rather ugly TechRadar ↗
  • May push or ride over small soft items like gloves and toys TechRadar ↗
  • The app does not save a cleaning zone for later use TechRadar ↗
  • The standard brush tangles badly with long hair, the optional cutting brush fixes that Vacuum Wars ↗
  • The station squeaked a lot while washing the mop pads Vacuum Wars ↗
  • Kept missing a longer pile rug on the test floor Vacuum Wars ↗

Where the testers disagree

  • Pet hair: TechRadar: Handles pet and human hair very well, helped by its hair-cutting brush against Vacuum Wars: The standard brush tangles badly with long hair, the optional cutting brush fixes that
  • Navigation: TechRadar: Maps rooms quickly and accurately, and rides over loose rugs without snagging against Vacuum Wars: Kept missing a longer pile rug on the test floor

From the published dimensions. The robot passes under furniture with 4.1 in of clearance or more.

Suction and brushes 5 facts
Suction power

Suction in pascal, as the maker measures it. More pascal helps on carpet, but it says little about how well the robot picks grit off a hard floor.

11,000 Pa
Anti-tangle brush

A brush that guides hair to the side instead of letting it wind around the shaft. It saves the cutting work in homes with long hair or pets. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

yes
Extending side brush

The side brush swings out in a corner or along a baseboard, so the dust there is swept in too.

yes
Suitable for pet hair

Whether the robot copes with pet hair: a brush that hair does not wind around and a dock that empties the bin for you. Where the maker does not say so itself, we read it from those two.

yes
Dirt detection

A sensor notices where more dirt lies, at the doormat for example, and the robot cleans that patch longer or a second time.

yes
Mopping 5 facts
Mop type

How the mop is built: flat pads, two spinning discs or a roller. Discs press harder on dried-on dirt, a roller rinses itself while it works.

spinning pads
Mop lift on carpet

How far the robot lifts the mop when it drives onto a carpet. From about 0.4 in (10 mm) a medium pile stays dry.

0.4 in (10.5 mm)
Mop extends to the edges

The pad slides out along a wall or a baseboard, so the last few inches are mopped as well.

yes
Automatic mop detach

The robot leaves the mop at the dock before it vacuums a carpet, so the carpet never gets wet.

yes
Mop refreshed while mopping

The robot returns to the dock during a run to rinse the mop, instead of pushing dirty water around.

no
Dock 13 facts
Empties the dust bin

The dock empties the robot’s dust bin, usually after every run. You only empty the dock’s bag or bin. On this model: the bag sits in the station.

yes
Bagless

The dock collects dust in a bin instead of a disposable bag. No bags to buy, but you empty it yourself.

no
Dust bag capacity

How much the dust bag in the dock holds.

3.2 l
Dust bag lasts

How long the maker says a dust bag lasts with daily use. With pets or a lot of carpet it is shorter. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

up to 75 days
Washes the mop

The dock washes the mop for you, so you do not rinse it by hand. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

yes
Wash temperature

How hot the dock washes the mop. Above 140 °F (60 °C) grease comes off, which is what keeps a mop from smelling. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

149 °F (65 °C)
Dries the mop

The dock dries the mop afterwards, so it does not sit there wet and start to smell. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

yes
Hot-air drying

Drying is done with warm air instead of cold. It is faster and it helps against smell. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

yes
Dispenses detergent

The dock mixes detergent into the water itself, from its own bottle. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

yes
Plumbing hookup

The dock can be connected to the tap and the drain, so you never fill or empty a tank. It does need a connection nearby. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

yes
Clean water tank

The clean water tank in the dock, which wets the mop.

4.5 l
Dirty water tank

The tank that catches the dirty water from the mop. You empty this one yourself.

4 l
Dock width

The width of the dock.

Navigation and obstacles 6 facts
Navigation

How the robot maps your home and follows that map. Lidar measures with a laser and works in the dark, a camera looks along and recognizes more.

LiDAR turret
Obstacle avoidance

How the robot sees loose things on the floor, such as cables, socks or a pet accident. A camera with depth sensing sees more than a bumper that reacts on contact. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

Climbs thresholds up to

The highest threshold the robot takes, as the maker states it. Measure your own: the step into a bathroom or onto a balcony is often higher.

0.9 in (22 mm)
Climbing system for high thresholds

An extending leg or wheel that carries the robot over a high threshold. Without one it usually stops at about 0.8 in (2 cm). On this model: the maker names this feature nowhere on the product page, so we take it as no.

no
No-go zones

How you keep the robot out of a place: a zone you draw in the app, a virtual wall or a magnetic strip on the floor.

Robot height

How tall the robot is. It decides whether it fits under your sofa, bed or cabinet.

Robot diameter

How wide the robot is. Narrower gets between chair legs more easily, wider usually means a bigger dust bin.

Battery capacity

The capacity of the battery. It hints at the runtime, but how much the robot draws counts just as much.
