What testers say about the Dyson Spot+Scrub AI

For anyone mainly after stains on hard floors without buying dust bags, and with room for the station, it is a strong choice.

The Dyson Spot+Scrub AI is Dyson's first robot with a mop, an auto-empty station and camera-based obstacle recognition: a wet roller that washes itself with every rotation, a bagless cyclone station that holds up to a hundred days of dust, washes the roller in 60-degree water and dries it with hot air, and lidar navigation with an AI camera and dual line laser at the front. Tom's Guide names it the best vacuum-and-mop hybrid; Vacuum Wars calls it Dyson's first serious contender.

Tom's Guide saw it deal with dried-on food and sticky messes that many hybrids leave behind, with strong suction, accurate maps and simple controls that rarely needed the testers to step in. Vacuum Wars praises above all the bagless station, built on Dyson's cyclone technology, and the leap from the 360 Vis Nav, which only vacuumed and navigated by camera.

Both testers' criticism concerns the size: at eleven centimetres the robot is tall and the station large and far from discreet, and the bagless bin is not to everyone's taste because you empty it yourself. The price sits in the premium class without every score being there, the side brush does not extend and thresholds stop at two centimetres.

What the tests like and dislike about the Dyson Spot+Scrub AI

Pros

  • The mop gets dried-on stains like tea and hot sauce off the floor Tom's Guide ↗
  • Strong suction, and its light shows up dust you would otherwise miss Tom's Guide ↗
  • The self-emptying dock is bagless, so there are no bags to buy Tom's Guide ↗
  • Keeps its mop roller so clean it still looked new after months TechRadar ↗
  • Steers around cables, slippers and socks without getting caught TechRadar ↗
  • Cleans hard floors well and slows its brushes so crumbs are not flung away TechRadar ↗
  • The bagless dock pulled out a big load of pet hair and stayed dry inside Vacuum Wars ↗
  • Avoided most obstacles in testing, impressive for Dyson's first system of its kind Vacuum Wars ↗
  • The roller mop removes dried stains a little better than the average robot Vacuum Wars ↗

Cons

  • Robot and dock are very large and take up a lot of floor space Tom's Guide ↗
  • The dock dries the mop roller for hours with an annoying hum Tom's Guide ↗
  • Sometimes leaves whole areas out, such as under the dining table Tom's Guide ↗
  • Emptying into the dock sometimes failed, leaving the robot's bin overflowing TechRadar ↗
  • Loud in every mode, even the quiet one carries a couple of rooms away TechRadar ↗
  • Zone cleaning missed the mess, and driving back onto the dock often took retries TechRadar ↗
  • Works through a room slowly, so runs take longer than on most robots Vacuum Wars ↗
  • Long hair wraps around the main brush more than on most robots Vacuum Wars ↗
  • The tall robot had trouble getting under furniture and into tight gaps Vacuum Wars ↗

Where the testers disagree

  • The station: Tom's Guide: The self-emptying dock is bagless, so there are no bags to buy · Vacuum Wars: The bagless dock pulled out a big load of pet hair and stayed dry inside against TechRadar: Emptying into the dock sometimes failed, leaving the robot's bin overflowing
  • Upkeep: TechRadar: Keeps its mop roller so clean it still looked new after months against Vacuum Wars: Long hair wraps around the main brush more than on most robots

Consumables: no dust bags to buy, the station collects the dust in a bin.

Dimensionsrobot and dock

Dock, from the front 47.4 cm high 44.2 cm deep 47.4 cm 51.1 cm wide Robot, from the side 37.3 cm across 10.9 cm

From the published dimensions. The robot passes under furniture with 11 cm of clearance or more. The dock needs a spot 51 cm wide and 44 cm deep.

Suction and brushes 3 facts
Suction power

Suction in pascal, as the maker measures it. More pascal helps on carpet, but it says little about how well the robot picks grit off a hard floor.

18,000 Pa
Anti-tangle brush

A brush that guides hair to the side instead of letting it wind around the shaft. It saves the cutting work in homes with long hair or pets.

yes
Extending side brush

The side brush swings out in a corner or along a kickboard, so the dust there is swept in too. On this model: the maker names this feature nowhere on the product page, so we take it as no.

no
Mopping 5 facts
Mop type

How the mop is built: flat pads, two spinning discs or a roller. Discs press harder on dried-on dirt, a roller rinses itself while it works.

roller mop
Mop lift on carpet

How far the robot lifts the mop when it drives onto a carpet. From about 10 mm a medium pile stays dry.

10 mm
Mop extends to the edges

The pad slides out along a wall or a kickboard, so the last few centimetres are mopped as well.

yes
Automatic mop detach

The robot leaves the mop at the dock before it vacuums a carpet, so the carpet never gets wet. On this model: the maker names this feature nowhere on the product page, so we take it as no.

no
Mop refreshed while mopping

The robot returns to the dock during a run to rinse the mop, instead of pushing dirty water around.

yes
Dock 10 facts
Empties the dust bin

The dock empties the robot’s dust bin, usually after every run. You only empty the dock’s bag or bin.

yes
Bagless

The dock collects dust in a bin instead of a disposable bag. No bags to buy, but you empty it yourself.

yes
Dust bag lasts

How long the maker says a dust bag lasts with daily use. With pets or a lot of carpet it is shorter.

up to 100 days
Washes the mop

The dock washes the mop for you, so you do not rinse it by hand.

yes
Wash temperature

How hot the dock washes the mop. Above 60 °C grease comes off, which is what keeps a mop from smelling.

60 °C
Dries the mop

The dock dries the mop afterwards, so it does not sit there wet and start to smell.

yes
Hot-air drying

Drying is done with warm air instead of cold. It is faster and it helps against smell.

yes
Dispenses detergent

The dock mixes detergent into the water itself, from its own bottle.

yes
Plumbing hookup

The dock can be connected to the tap and the drain, so you never fill or empty a tank. It does need a connection nearby.

no
Dock size (w × d × h)

The width, depth and height of the dock. Measure the spot you have in mind, and leave room for the lid and for the robot driving in.

51.1 × 44.2 × 47.4 cm
Navigation and obstacles 4 facts
Navigation

How the robot maps your home and follows that map. Lidar measures with a laser and works in the dark, a camera looks along and recognises more.

LiDAR turret
Obstacle avoidance

How the robot sees loose things on the floor, such as cables, socks or a pet accident. A camera with depth sensing sees more than a bumper that reacts on contact.

AI camera
Climbs thresholds up to

The highest threshold the robot takes, as the maker states it. Measure your own: the step into a bathroom or onto a balcony is often higher.

20 mm
Climbing system for high thresholds

An extending leg or wheel that carries the robot over a high threshold. Without one it usually stops at about 2 cm. On this model: the maker names this feature nowhere on the product page, so we take it as no.

no
Robot 5 facts
Robot height

How tall the robot is. It decides whether it fits under your sofa, bed or cabinet.

10.9 cm
Robot diameter

How wide the robot is. Narrower gets between chair legs more easily, wider usually means a bigger dust bin.

37.3 cm
Robot weight

What the robot weighs. It counts most if you carry it up a staircase every day.

6.6 kg
Dust bin in the robot

How much dust the robot holds before you empty it. It matters less with an auto-empty dock, which empties the bin after every run.

500 ml
Noise

The noise in decibels, in the setting its source names: makers mostly give the standard setting, shops often the highest. 65 dB is like a vacuum at half power, 55 dB like a conversation. On this model: maximum noise level according to Coolblue.

70 dB
Battery 1 fact
Runtime per charge

How long the robot cleans on one charge, at its quietest setting. After that it recharges and carries on where it stopped.

200 min
Smart features and warranty 1 fact
Matter

Matter is the standard that lets devices from different makers work together. With it you can run the robot outside the maker’s own app. On this model: the maker names this feature nowhere on the product page, so we take it as no.
