What to expect from the Dreame D20
For anyone who only wants to vacuum in a home with hard floors and is happy to empty it themselves, it is a cheap and generously equipped entry model.
The Dreame D20 is the bare version of the D20 line: 13,000 Pa of suction, the split HyperStream anti-tangle brush, a fixed mop cloth for light mopping and Smart Pathfinder navigation, without a station. The 5,200 mAh battery is rated for 285 minutes, the longest run time in Dreame's entry class, and the robot is 96.9 millimetres tall.
The strength is the combination of an anti-tangle brush and a large battery for little money: the robot does a large home in one run and hair does not stay wrapped around the brush. The D20 Pro Plus shares the brush and the run time and adds an auto-empty station, an extending side brush and obstacle recognition.
The limits: you empty the bin yourself, the mop cloth does not lift on carpet and only mops lightly, the side brush does not extend and our specifications list no obstacle recognition and no threshold height above two centimetres. None of our test sources has measured the D20.
Based on the maker's specifications and our price data. None of our test sources has tested this model.
Dreame D20 specifications
The numbers that matter first, then every fact by group. As published by the maker or the shop we read it from.
A brush that guides hair to the side instead of letting it wind around the shaft. It saves the cutting work in homes with long hair or pets. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.
yes
Extending side brush
When it matters
Corners and edges along kickboards, where a round robot leaves a strip of dust.
The side brush swings out in a corner or along a kickboard, so the dust there is swept in too. On this model: Assumed, not a stated fact: the maker's full specification does not name it, so we take it as no.
no (assumed)
Dirt detection
When it matters
Entrances and kitchens, where dirt gathers in one place.
Pets that leave hair in a favourite spot.
When it matters less
If dirt is spread evenly, a normal pass cleans it just as well.
The pad slides out along a wall or a kickboard, so the last few centimetres are mopped as well. On this model: Assumed, not a stated fact: the maker's full specification does not name it, so we take it as no.
The robot returns to the dock during a run to rinse the mop, instead of pushing dirty water around. On this model: Assumed, not a stated fact: the maker's full specification does not name it, so we take it as no.
no (assumed)
Water tank in the robot
When it matters
Large hard floors mopped in one go.
A robot whose dock does not refill it during a run.
When it matters less
With a dock that refills the robot during the run, the tank’s size hardly matters.
The dock collects dust in a bin instead of a disposable bag. No bags to buy, but you empty it yourself. On this model: Assumed, not a stated fact: the maker's full specification does not name it, so we take it as no.
no (assumed)
Dispenses detergent
When it matters
Kitchens and greasy floors, where water alone leaves a film.
Not wanting to add cleaner by hand each time.
When it matters less
Some floors, such as oiled wood, are best mopped with water only, so there it adds nothing.
The dock mixes detergent into the water itself, from its own bottle. On this model: Assumed, not a stated fact: the maker's full specification does not name it, so we take it as no.
no (assumed)
Plumbing hookup
When it matters
Mopping every day, without filling and emptying tanks.
A spot near a tap and a drain, such as a utility room or under a kitchen counter.
When it matters less
If the dock stands far from any plumbing, it is no use.
The dock can be connected to the tap and the drain, so you never fill or empty a tank. It does need a connection nearby. On this model: Assumed, not a stated fact: the maker's full specification does not name it, so we take it as no.
no (assumed)
Dock size (w × d × h)
When it matters
A small hallway or a niche where the dock has to fit.
Placing the dock under a cabinet or a counter.
When it matters less
Along an open wall with room to spare it decides little.
How the robot sees loose things on the floor, such as cables, socks or a pet accident. A camera with depth sensing sees more than a bumper that reacts on contact.
An extending leg or wheel that carries the robot over a high threshold. Without one it usually stops at about 2 cm. On this model: Assumed, not a stated fact: the maker's full specification does not name it, so we take it as no.
no (assumed)

With furniture on high legs or flat on the floor it decides nothing.
The noise in decibels while cleaning, in the setting its source names: makers mostly give the standard setting, shops often the highest. 65 dB is like a vacuum at half power, 55 dB like a conversation. Emptying by the dock is louder and listed on its own.
How long the robot cleans on one charge, at its quietest setting. After that it recharges and carries on where it stopped. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

Matter
When it matters
Running the robot alongside devices from other makers in one app.
Not wanting to depend on the maker’s own app.
When it matters less
If the maker’s app is all you use, it adds nothing.
Matter is the standard that lets devices from different makers work together. With it you can run the robot outside the maker’s own app. On this model: Assumed, not a stated fact: the maker's full specification does not name it, so we take it as no.
no (assumed)
Voice assistants
When it matters
Starting the robot by voice while your hands are full.

When it matters less

Warranty
When it matters
A robot with a dock full of pumps and moving parts, where more can break.
An expensive robot you plan to keep for years.
When it matters less
For a cheap robot you would replace rather than repair, the extra years count for less.
