What to expect from the iRobot Roomba Max 705 Combo

The iRobot Roomba Max 705 Combo is the entry model of iRobot's Max line: 13,000 Pa of suction, two rubber brushes and two edge brushes, and the PowerSpin roller mop, which cleans itself continuously, is heated while it mops, pulls out to reach edges and corners and sits under a cover that keeps rugs dry. It navigates with ClearView Pro lidar, and its PrecisionVision camera recognises cables, socks and pet waste. The AutoWash station empties the bin for up to 75 days, washes the roller, hot-dries it, doses detergent and runs its own self-cleaning cycle.

On paper it has the same kind of roller mop and washing station as the Max 775 Combo, with less suction (13,000 Pa against 30,000 Pa) and a bag interval of 75 rather than 90 days. Voice control works with Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant.

None of our test sources has measured it, and the previous generation of Roombas was criticised by Vacuum Wars and Tom's Guide for a buggy app and mediocre obstacle recognition. At 105 millimetres it is tall for low furniture, thresholds stop at 16 millimetres, and our specifications list no battery or run time. Anyone who wants a Roomba with a real roller mop and a washing station without paying for the Max 775's extra suction has the obvious candidate here.

Suction and brushes 1 fact
Suction power

Suction in pascal, as the maker measures it. More pascal helps on carpet, but it says little about how well the robot picks grit off a hard floor.

Mopping 3 facts
Mop type

How the mop is built: flat pads, two spinning discs or a roller. Discs press harder on dried-on dirt, a roller rinses itself while it works.

roller mop
Mop extends to the edges

The pad slides out along a wall or a kickboard, so the last few centimetres are mopped as well.

yes
Mop refreshed while mopping

The robot returns to the dock during a run to rinse the mop, instead of pushing dirty water around.

yes
Dock 8 facts
Empties the dust bin

The dock empties the robot’s dust bin, usually after every run. You only empty the dock’s bag or bin.

yes
Bagless

The dock collects dust in a bin instead of a disposable bag. No bags to buy, but you empty it yourself.

no
Dust bag capacity

How much the dust bag in the dock holds.

2.5 l
Dust bag lasts

How long the maker says a dust bag lasts with daily use. With pets or a lot of carpet it is shorter.

up to 75 days
Washes the mop

The dock washes the mop for you, so you do not rinse it by hand.

yes
Dries the mop

The dock dries the mop afterwards, so it does not sit there wet and start to smell.

yes
Hot-air drying

Drying is done with warm air instead of cold. It is faster and it helps against smell.

yes
Dispenses detergent

The dock mixes detergent into the water itself, from its own bottle.

yes
Navigation and obstacles 4 facts
Navigation

How the robot maps your home and follows that map. Lidar measures with a laser and works in the dark, a camera looks along and recognises more.

built-in LiDAR, no turret
Obstacle avoidance

How the robot sees loose things on the floor, such as cables, socks or a pet accident. A camera with depth sensing sees more than a bumper that reacts on contact.

Climbs thresholds up to

The highest threshold the robot takes, as the maker states it. Measure your own: the step into a bathroom or onto a balcony is often higher.

16 mm
Climbing system for high thresholds

An extending leg or wheel that carries the robot over a high threshold. Without one it usually stops at about 2 cm.

Robot height

How tall the robot is. It decides whether it fits under your sofa, bed or cabinet.

10.5 cm
Dust bin in the robot

How much dust the robot holds before you empty it. It matters less with an auto-empty dock, which empties the bin after every run.

Runtime per charge

How long the robot cleans on one charge, at its quietest setting. After that it recharges and carries on where it stopped.
