How long do robot vacuums last, and how often should you run one?

Makers usually say 4 to 6 years for a robot vacuum and 2 to 3 years for its battery. These are typical values, not a promise. No maker says how often to run one: what counts is how much dirt it handles and how well you look after it.

How long does a robot vacuum last on average?

ECOVACS writes that a robot vacuum typically lasts 4 to 6 years, depending on build quality, how often it runs and how well it is maintained. Dreame gives the same 4 to 6 years and says a pricier model with sturdier parts tends to reach the top of that range. Both figures come from makers and are a guide, not a promise.

An average says little about your model. The battery, the brushes and the wheels wear out first, and they can often be replaced. As long as parts are available, the robot itself can keep working longer than its battery.

How long does the battery last?

The battery is usually the first part to need replacing. iRobot writes that with proper care a Roomba battery should last at least 2 to 3 years. ECOVACS gives 2 to 3 years as the typical life and says a battery sometimes lasts 2 to 5 years, depending on its type and use.

You notice it in a shorter run time and slower charging. iRobot’s tips for a longer battery life:

  • Use only batteries from the maker itself.
  • Charge the robot at room temperature, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep the robot clean. If it clogs with hair and debris, it works harder and drains the battery faster.
  • Recharge the robot as soon as possible after each run, and leave it on its dock when it is not running.
  • If it will not run for more than a few weeks, put it in ship mode or take the battery out and store it somewhere cool and dry.
  • Fully charge the battery at least once every six months.

How often should you run a robot vacuum?

None of the makers we read gives a number of runs per week. Dreame does say that a robot that runs daily in a large home with pets has more to deal with than one that runs now and then in a tidy apartment, and that this speeds up wear on brushes, motor and sensors.

So run it as often as your floor needs. If the bin is no longer full of dirt, it does not need to run more. Running it daily does not shorten its life by itself, but you will have to clean the robot more often.

What can you do to make it last longer?

Maintenance does the most. ECOVACS recommends cleaning the robot every 1 to 2 weeks, or on the maker’s own schedule. That covers the brushes, the filters, the sensors and the station.

Replace wear parts on time. For the DEEBOT X11 OmniCyclone, ECOVACS names a mop roller every 1 to 2 months and a side brush every 3 to 6 months. That schedule is for that model. Check the manual for yours. Our guide on how to clean a Roomba checks the same at iRobot.

Which model should you pick if it has to last?

No list predicts how long a model lasts. A model that scores well in tests and has parts you can replace gives the best chance. These are the best-ranked models on sale now:

Frequently asked questions

How long does a robot vacuum last?

Makers such as ECOVACS and Dreame typically say 4 to 6 years. It is a guide that depends on build quality, use and maintenance.

How long does a robot vacuum battery last?

With proper care iRobot says at least 2 to 3 years for a Roomba, and ECOVACS also says 2 to 3 years. If you see a shorter run time or slower charging, the battery is due for replacement.

How often should a robot vacuum run?

No maker sets a rule. Run it as often as your floor needs. Running it more often means cleaning the brushes and the filter more often.

What fails first on a robot vacuum?

Usually the wear parts: the battery, the brushes and the filters. They can be replaced. An iRobot battery is sold by iRobot or an authorized retailer.

Should I fully charge the battery if the robot sits unused?

iRobot advises fully charging the battery at least once every six months. If the robot sits for more than a few weeks, put it in ship mode or take the battery out.
