Clean air delivery rate (CADR)

How much clean air the purifier delivers an hour, measured with smoke, dust and pollen. A higher figure cleans a bigger room or the same room faster.

214 m³/h
CADR measured to

The test the CADR comes from. AHAM AC-1 and the DOE test are independent and comparable. A maker's own test is not.

The maker's own test
CADR for smoke

The CADR measured with tobacco smoke, the finest of the three test particles. It is the figure to read for wildfire smoke.

214 m³/h
CADR for dust

The CADR measured with dust.

219 m³/h
CADR for pollen

The CADR measured with pollen.

211 m³/h
Room size we compare on

The room size where the purifier changes the air 4.8 times an hour under a 2.5 m ceiling, worked out from its CADR. We use it so every model is compared on the same rule.

18 m²
Room size the maker claims

The room size the maker states. Makers use different rules, so we show it but never rank on it.

Filter 7 facts
HEPA filter class

How fine the filter is. True HEPA and H13 catch at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns. HEPA-type is a weaker claim with no test behind it.

True HEPA
Filter layout

Whether the particle and carbon layers are one filter or separate ones. Separate filters let you replace only the part that is spent.

Separate filters
Activated carbon filter

A filter of activated carbon that takes out smells and some gases. It does not catch particles.

yes
Filter parts

How many filters the purifier holds, each a part to replace.

Replacement filter part number

Filter change reminder

How the purifier tells you the filter is due. A timer counts the hours it has run, a sensor judges the filter itself, an estimate weighs the hours against the air it cleaned, and a plain indicator is one the maker does not explain.

Filter change indicator
Antimicrobial filter

The maker says the filter is treated to stop bacteria or mould growing on it. It changes nothing about what the filter catches.

yes
Running costs 2 facts
Filter life

How long the maker says a filter lasts, in months of normal use. A filter that is spent cleans less.

12 months
Carbon filter life

How long the carbon filter lasts before it needs replacing, as its maker states it. Where it is a separate part, it is bought on its own schedule.

3 months
Noise and power 2 facts
Power at the highest speed

The power the purifier draws at its highest speed.

62 W
Fan speeds

How many speeds you can choose by hand, the automatic mode not counted.

4
Air quality sensing 3 facts
Air quality on the unit

What the unit itself shows of the air it measures: a figure, such as the PM2.5 level, or only a coloured light.

Colour light
Automatic mode

The fan speed follows the air quality the sensor reads.

yes
Modes

The settings the maker names besides plain fan speeds, such as a quiet sleep mode or a timer.

Allergen
Build 3 facts
Height

How tall the purifier is. It decides whether it fits on a shelf or under a window sill.

52 cm
Width

How wide the purifier is. With its depth it decides how much floor it takes up.

330 mm
Depth

How deep the purifier is, front to back.

181 mm
Extras 1 fact
Other air treatment

What the purifier does beside its filter: UV-C light, photocatalytic oxidation, plasma, a bipolar ion generator or electrostatic plates. Some of these can make ozone or other by-products, and none replaces a good filter.

Fellowes

  • Headquarters: United States
  • Founded in 1917

Fellowes traces its start to 1917, when Harry Fellowes took over a record storage box and registered the company as The Bankers Box Company. Its corporate headquarters are in Itasca, Illinois, in the United States. The company is still owned and led by the Fellowes family, now in its fourth generation. It widened its brand from paper shredders to areas such as air purification. Its Dutch site says an air purifier with HEPA filtration can remove nearly all (99.95%) airborne particles of 0.3 micron.
