Best value
No cheaper model scores higher.
We line the models up by today’s price. A model gets this label when it scores higher than every cheaper model, so each step up the line buys a higher score. A higher score counts only from 0.5 points (out of 10) above the previous label, so a gap that reads as equal on the page earns no new label.

How fine the filter is. True HEPA and H13 catch at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns. HEPA-type is a weaker claim with no test behind it.
When it matters
Allergy to pollen, dust mites or pet dander.
Fine dust from traffic, wood stoves or wildfire smoke.
When it matters less
For smells alone the particle filter’s class decides little: the carbon filter does that work.

How the purifier tells you the filter is due. A timer counts the hours it has run, a sensor judges the filter itself, an estimate weighs the hours against the air it cleaned, and a plain indicator is one the maker does not explain.

When it matters

A filter you change late.
When it matters less
For what the purifier takes out of the air it decides nothing.
What the purifier does beside its filter: UV-C light, photocatalytic oxidation, plasma, a bipolar ion generator or electrostatic plates. Some of these can make ozone or other by-products, and none replaces a good filter.

Fellowes traces its start to 1917, when Harry Fellowes took over a record storage box and registered the company as The Bankers Box Company. Its corporate headquarters are in Itasca, Illinois, in the United States. The company is still owned and led by the Fellowes family, now in its fourth generation. It widened its brand from paper shredders to areas such as air purification. Its Dutch site says an air purifier with HEPA filtration can remove nearly all (99.95%) airborne particles of 0.3 micron.
