How the robot sees loose things on the floor, such as cables, socks or a pet accident. A camera with depth sensing sees more than a bumper that reacts on contact.
When it matters
Cables, socks and toys left on the floor.
Pets, whose accidents a robot should steer around.
In a home that is tidied before each run it matters less.

The Dreame L40 Ultra is an all-in-one robot with two spinning mop pads that extend and swing, an extending side brush and camera-based obstacle recognition. The station empties the bin into a 3.2-litre bag, washes the pads in 65-degree water, dries them with hot air, doses cleaning solution and can be plumbed in; the pads stay behind in the station when the robot only vacuums. TechRadar names it the best robot for pet hair; Vacuum Wars calls it better than the pricier X40.
TechRadar tested it in a home full of pets and saw it pull more hair out of carpet than any other robot the reviewer had tried, without clogging the emptying mechanism; it also did well on hard floors and mopping muddy paw prints. Vacuum Wars measured the highest battery efficiency it had seen, roughly double the average, with a quoted run time of 194 minutes, and a dried-stain mopping score above average and above the X40. On carpet it lifted embedded sand at an above-average rate.
Both testers' criticism concerns the station: it is big and the styling is not for everyone. Beyond that, the robot is on the tall side at just over ten centimetres, thresholds stop at a little over two centimetres and the quoted 11,000 Pa of suction is modest next to newer models. Compare its price with the L40 Ultra AE and the newer L50 models too.

Dreame L40 Ultra specifications
The numbers that matter first, then every fact by group. As published by the maker or the shop we read it from.
A brush that guides hair to the side instead of letting it wind around the shaft. It saves the cutting work in homes with long hair or pets. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.
yes
Extending side brush
When it matters
Corners and edges along kickboards, where a round robot leaves a strip of dust.
The side brush swings out in a corner or along a kickboard, so the dust there is swept in too.
yes
Suitable for pet hair
When it matters
Dogs and cats that shed.
Long-haired pets, whose hair wraps around a brush.
Without pets, ordinary hair and dust need nothing special.
Source: derived, no source of its own · checked on 2 Oct
Whether the robot copes with pet hair: a brush that hair does not wind around and a dock that empties the bin for you. Where the maker does not say so itself, we read it from those two.
yes
Dirt detection
When it matters
Entrances and kitchens, where dirt gathers in one place.
Pets that leave hair in a favourite spot.
If dirt is spread evenly, a normal pass cleans it just as well.
The robot returns to the dock during a run to rinse the mop, instead of pushing dirty water around. On this model: Assumed, not a stated fact: the maker's full specification does not name it, so we take it as no.

Empties the dust bin
When it matters
Pets, sand or a large home, which fill the bin every run.
Dust allergy, since you rarely touch the dust yourself.
In a small home with little dust, emptying the bin by hand takes a moment.
How long the maker says a dust bag lasts with daily use. With pets or a lot of carpet it is shorter. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.

Washes the mop
297 of the 378 models we track have this.
When it matters
Mopping several times a week, when rinsing pads by hand gets tiresome.
Kitchens and hallways, where a mop picks up a lot of dirt.
If you rarely mop, washing the pads by hand is little work.
How hot the dock washes the mop. Above 60 °C grease comes off, which is what keeps a mop from smelling. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.
65 °C
Dries the mop
When it matters
Mopping often, since a damp mop in the dock starts to smell.
Humid rooms, where a mop dries slowly.
If you take the pads off and wash them yourself, you will not miss it.
The dock dries the mop afterwards, so it does not sit there wet and start to smell. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.
yes
Hot-air drying
245 of the 295 models we track have this.
When it matters
Mopping daily, when the mop barely dries before the next run.
A smell from the dock in a warm or humid home.
If you mop only now and then, cold air dries the mop in time.
Drying is done with warm air instead of cold. It is faster and it helps against smell. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.
yes
Dispenses detergent
When it matters
Kitchens and greasy floors, where water alone leaves a film.
Not wanting to add cleaner by hand each time.
Some floors, such as oiled wood, are best mopped with water only, so there it adds nothing.
The dock can be connected to the tap and the drain, so you never fill or empty a tank. It does need a connection nearby. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.
yes
Clean water tank
When it matters
Large hard floors mopped every day.
Being away for days while the robot keeps mopping.
With a dock connected to the tap the tank is filled for you.
How the robot sees loose things on the floor, such as cables, socks or a pet accident. A camera with depth sensing sees more than a bumper that reacts on contact. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.
An extending leg or wheel that carries the robot over a high threshold. Without one it usually stops at about 2 cm. On this model: Assumed, not a stated fact: the maker's full specification does not name it, so we take it as no.
no (assumed)
No-go zones
When it matters
Pet bowls, a play corner or a rug with tassels the robot should skip.
Places where it gets stuck, such as under a low chair.
In a clear home with nothing to avoid you will rarely use it.
How long the robot cleans on one charge, at its quietest setting. After that it recharges and carries on where it stopped. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.
