What testers say about the iRobot Roomba Plus 505 Combo
The iRobot Roomba Plus 505 Combo is the first Roomba generation with spinning mop pads, lidar navigation and a station that empties the bin into a bag lasting 75 days, washes and dries the pads, refills the water tank and drains the dirty water. Tom's Guide tested it at home and wrote that it replaced the stick vacuum: it reached deep into corners, has built-in lights, coped well with pet hair and genuinely scrubbed the floor clean.
The reviewer praised the fast mapping, the simple controls and the mop pad that extends along edges. The station takes almost everything off your hands, from emptying to washing and refilling, and the quoted run time is three hours. Obstacle recognition works with a camera and lighting.
The criticism: the app was glitchy at times, spot cleaning did not convince, the station is loud when emptying and the robot only works with certain floor cleaners. Against the Asian competition the 7,000 Pa of suction is modest, the station washes without warm water and doses no solution, the robot is tall at just over ten centimetres and thresholds stop at two centimetres. Anyone wanting a Roomba that finally mops by itself and looks after itself gets the complete version here; on price and equipment the competition is sharper.

Carpet detection
When it matters
Rugs and carpets, where the robot should raise its suction.
Mopping in a home with rugs, which have to stay dry.
The robot notices when it drives onto a carpet. Most then raise their suction, and a mopping robot lifts its mop or leaves it at the dock.

When it matters
Entrances and kitchens, where dirt gathers in one place.
Pets that leave hair in a favourite spot.
If dirt is spread evenly, a normal pass cleans it just as well.
How the mop is built: flat pads, two spinning discs or a roller. Discs press harder on dried-on dirt, a roller rinses itself while it works. On this model: from the maker's product text, not from a specification table.
The robot leaves the mop at the dock before it vacuums a carpet, so the carpet never gets wet. On this model: Assumed, not a stated fact: the maker's full specification does not name it, so we take it as no.

Mop refreshed while mopping
When it matters
Large hard floors, where a mop that is never rinsed spreads dirt around.
Kitchens with sticky spills.
In a small home the mop does not get dirty enough in one run for it to matter.
The robot returns to the dock during a run to rinse the mop, instead of pushing dirty water around. On this model: Assumed, not a stated fact: the maker's full specification does not name it, so we take it as no.

Pets, sand or a large home, which fill the bin every run.
Dust allergy, since you rarely touch the dust yourself.
In a small home with little dust, emptying the bin by hand takes a moment.
The dock collects dust in a bin instead of a disposable bag. No bags to buy, but you empty it yourself. On this model: Assumed, not a stated fact: the maker's full specification does not name it, so we take it as no.
